How long did it take to get home?

First I want to give a big shout out to Rocky Anderson and his collation of damn hippies that delayed the Legacy parkway for, oh, I don't know ... 12 YEARS!! Had it been started back in 1996 when it was proposed ...  or even back in 2002 when they started all that ridiculous work on it in Farmington before being stopped by lawsuits then 21,000 people wouldn't have been sitting on the freeway for 4 + hours last night. ARGH!!

 

I get off at 3:30. If all goes well, I pick up John at 3:45 and we're home by 4:30 at the latest.

 

Yesterday all was going as usual when we hit Beck Street at 3:50 all traffic was stopped. It took nearly 20 minutes to get through the light at Capital Hill and we turned thinking Redwood Road would be better so we backtracked and ended up on Redwood road for another HOUR!

 

Nice that it was still before 4:09 and that idiot Sean Hannity was still rambling on about nothing when you'd think that KSL could break in for LOCAL TRAFFIC EMERGENCIES!

 

Turns out that a couple of semis dumped their cargo - a 210,000 pound storage tank - on the freeway just where I-215 and I-15 merger on the northbound side of the freeway. Thus causing they to CLOSE I-215 and divert people on to Redwood Road, I-15 was down to one lane and eventually they even closed Beck Street and forced everyone off on to Hwy 89. So ALL roads in to Davis County were successfully closed off trapping everyone in SLC.

 

After that first hour and 20 minutes we were no farther then we were when we started on Beck Street ...  in fact we were further back because I turned off at 700 N to go back into town and find food. 

 

Dinner sounded like a good option because we were both tired and cranky and food seemed to be the remedy. So we went to The Ruby River Steak House. I had a 8oz Sirloin with a deep-fried Yam with cinnamon... mmmm. So it wasn't a quick dinner it probably took us another hour and a half to eat and then we decided that we'd try one more time to get home. when we left the restaurant it was coming up on 6:15.

 

We entered the freeway at 400 S this time and immediately moved into the left lane because that was the one that was open and it took us another hour to get to the North Interchange to see the gigantic tank that was taking up most of the road. We passed the thing at 7:20 and once past it the freeway was clear and empty and it took us 16 more minutes to get home from there.

 

It's so frustrating! I wish that I had a job that was convenient to public transportation (specifically the Front-Runner after yesterday) so I wouldn't have to drive into salt lake every day.... or better yet, I wish I could just stay home. But neither are options at this point in time so I suffer with the rest of the Dais County residents who can't get home from work at decent hours.

Ack! How long was that movie?!

113 minutes of my life that I will never get back. That's nearly 2 hours I sat and watched a terrible waste of film that I am disappointed to say I have even watched it. 1 hour and 53 minutes I could have spent on more important tasks like napping or doing yard work. Ugh!

 

What movie am I talking about?

 

The Golden Compass

 

I'm not giving this review bad marks because of what I had heard about it previously and the Anti-Christ undertones and what-not. In fact I was so confused while watching this that the characters could have blatantly come out and said directly to me calling me by name that there was no God I probably wouldn't have noticed.

The movie was terrible. The acting was bad. The children were ugly. It all sounded like gibberish and nonsense to me and I would say I've seen/read enough Fantasy to be able to pick out a plot and follow it, but with this I just couldn't. I tried in my mind to relate the nonsense on the screen to what I know in my mind hoping to make some sense of it all and I came up empty.

Half way through the movie I stated out loud for the world to hear that "this movie is stupid and makes no sense." However John was the only one there to hear me and he paused the movie and tried to explain what was going on, but in reality I don't think he knew either. He said I needed to pay attention to the undertones and see that the government is trying to steal the children's innocence and control them as they get older.... huh? I'm sure that was there, but I just wasn't getting it.

And lets talk about trauma. Ripping a child's "demon" away and calling it a "small cut" when it was obvious that any small hurt to a demon reflected to the child. That's terrible. I think that was more traumatizing to a person watching then to see a Skeksis sucking the essence out of a Gelfling! AHH! (see The Dark Crystal as reference)

This is supposed to be based on a children's book? Then why the hell was it so confusing? I can rightly say that this is one movie I will NEVER be watching again and there was not even a spark of interest to even encourage me to read the books to make sense of it all. There is also no way I would ever pick up a sequel to this let alone ever want to pay money to see it in a theater. Philip Pullman is on my DO NOT READ list simply because I hated this movie.

Is there anything that could have redeemed this movie? Hmmmm ... Perhaps more character development. Perhaps some further explanation regarding dust and compasses and gobs for those in the world who have never read the book. Better actors. More action less stupid. Not trying to cram so much deep meaning into a stupid movie and go for entertainment value and not confused people. . . No, I think there is no redemption for this movie.

 

I'm just glad it was a free rental.

Patience is a virtue....

I can't even begin to say how many times I have been asked this question this morning like I am the guru of this particular genre.... but here it is for the rest of you who have not asked me yet today:

X-Files: I Want To Believe

Don't read the reviews of this movie. Don't listen to other's slam it or degrade it as something not worthy of your attention. Go see it because you WANT to because you're FAN of the X-Files. This movie is not Batman or Star Wars or Indiana Jones for petes sake. It's the X-Files!
First off it's a stand alone story. There is no link to the on going plot line of abductions, little sisters, alien babies or the Smoking Man. It's just it's own movie, don't look for connections.
Mulder is brought in on a case by the FBI regarding a psychic in a case involving an agent they grant him immunity if he helps them but he will only help if Scully comes along too.
There is some heart breaking moments, some gore, some crazies, some needles, some scalpels and a 2 headed dog...
But all in all, I enjoyed the movie. I was happy to see Mulder and Scully working together again and being together. I was happy for the brief appearance of one of my other favorite characters. I was enthralled and stretched by the topic of the movie.
I think that perhaps if it wasn't up against movies like The Dark Knight and the other summer blockbusters it would have done so much better then the $10.2 Million it brought in at the box office this weekend. I also think a little more advertising could have helped too.
Don't hold your hopes up for a thrilling, exploding, adventure extravaganza because this movie is not it. It's plain and simple. It's the X-Files.
